Durango Colorado

2015-09-20_006We went out to Colorado to ride the Train from Durango up to Silverton.  This is an old train that still runs off coal and steam. Goes up through the mountains along the Animas River. Yes, this has been in the news lately for the spill they had and looks as if it is okay to visit.  I will say it is such a beautiful trip.

2015-09-19_009We road in the last car which is one of the oldest passenger cars. The train tracks are much closer together than a regular train.2015-09-20_001

This helps keep the train on the track around the thin passage area and around the mountains. This is the Denver & Rio Grande Railway. The Tracks are only 3 feet wide. This was originally opened in 1882 to transport gold and silver.

2015-09-19_011They have a great museum for everyone to visit, it is filled with all sorts of great train items and trains.  It was such a beautiful day for a train ride,  nice sunny day, with a wonderful cool breeze. We loved the scenery on our ride, charming. I love hearing the train whistle, they would blow it and everyone would come out to wave at the train.

We stopped to fill the train up with water 2 different times. We stopped to let passengers on and off the train. They have many different things to do on the way to Silverton,  camping, hiking, skiing, zip lines, a great hotel and sight seeing.

I will say I had a great day, but I got an ember in my eye  from the coal smoke. I spent the good part of the evening in the hospital having to see a doctor then an eye doctor. Thank goodness it was just a few scratches and it would heal in a week or so nothing permanent. Had the nicest Doctors so nice and took such good care of me, was so please with the care I received. When you are that far away from home it is a little scary but I was so impressed with everyone and their knowledge. Thanks everyone!! I do wish they would tell people to wear glasses or protective eye wear….please! 2015-09-20_007

Silverton, Colorado looks as if you have stepped back in time, no paved streets in town. This is a mining area and you can see this all over the town. They still have the old saloons.

2015-09-19_005We had a great meal in Durango, it was maybe the best steak I have ever had….that is a big claim. But, oh my it was an amazing meal.  Go and see for your self, you will not be disappointed. Sorry no photos we wolfed it down so fast…all you could see is the smoke.

I rode the train this year in January when there was about 2 feet of snow on the ground and the sights were magnificent! I’m a new follower and love your posts.
