This past week my mom, sister and myself took a road trip. What a trip! We drove over thousand miles….yes two thousand and two hundred miles to be exact. We did have a wonderful time but lots and lots of driving! We had some wonderful food….YEA ! The best meal I had was in Austin Texas more to come on this later. The reason for the trip was we wanted to attend a wedding a June wedding in Houston. I left Atlanta and the 1st stop was at a place I love. It is on the way to Mississippi is Edgar’s a great little bakery in Birmingham, Alabama.
I drove on to Mississippi spent the night. We hit the road bright and early why I had a mission get to New Orleans in time for breakfast heee heee so off we went blazing down the road look out Mr Policeman here we come happy trails….heee heee our first stop snack for the road Sucure. Such a beautiful shop, I went just to try their version of the french macrons, but the chocolates where better than the cookies dang it. They will not be knocking any one out of 1st place for the best “French Macaron” that is for sure see other post on these wonderful cookies under My Macaron Adventures. I love them to be light crispy on the outside but yet chewy on the inside with a very flavorful filling to complement the cookie. These are beautiful and good yet just not award winning…too dry not chewy enough. I am training my mom and sister by the end of the trip I had them agreeing with me on the cookies and what made a good one…after many different places.
On to breakfast and oh dear me I have been to this here a 100 times over the years… oh dear me. You know how you just love a place for the old memories and the fun times this is one of those places for me. But, oh my goodness the beignets are so wonderful and they where even better than I remembered awwwww heaven! Light…crunchy, fried coated in powdered sugar yum what is not to like right and an iced chicory coffee, a cafe au lait wonderful trip complete right now!! I could go on home and be happy ~
We did walk down to Aunt Sally’s and get pralines…well they are not as good as I remember quality control is on vacation there. Sorry Sally it is the truth. There is really no Sally just kidding. We enjoyed the Jackson square and I even bought me a tutu heee heee what fun only in Nola could I find a tutu heee hee will be great with leggings and cowboy boots in winter heee heee will get some looks I am sure with that getup on fur sure huh!! Then off to lunch which is a another landmark here Parkway yummmmm
At Parkway we got a dressed roast beef po’boy amazing and a fried shrimp po’boy…not sure which I liked best both so, so good. Always best to get one large of each then split with someone. Then on the road again what fun!! Happy Trails…we drove down all the way to Houma and then all the way back up and got to see lots of fun places and had another meal at Cafe Des Amis in Breaue Bridge Louisiana oh goodness I had a deelish meal to start we had gumbo and it was the best we have ever had…ever then it was crawfish etouffee with fried crawfish.
Then on to Houston for the Wedding. We got to the to the rehearsal which was so lovely. It was such a beautiful church wow such an old traditional church so pretty…I loved it!
The wedding was so beautiful…..she was such a beautiful bride. So, glad we went! It was a lovely sit down dinner for the reception and beautiful cakes. Got to see all my dad’s family and relatives. We got in so late after such a wonderful evening of eating, dancing and visiting. I am happy I came to celebrate her beautiful day…. Congratulations to you both, I wish you a long healthy happy life together. I hope it is filled with love, joy and much happiness.
Then the next morning being good southern ladies we all got up and went to the mega church. Joel Osteen’s church and oh my goodness talk about mega church so many people wow wee!! He looks just like he does on TV….since we where 1st timers there to the church we got to sit right down front yee hi and Victoria is much prettier in person…just so pretty!
We all went out to lunch with all my aunts and then went and got more macrons for the road heee heee these tasted better than Sucre’s but did not have picture worthy of a photo shoot but tasted real good! On the road again….heee heee here we go! oh man was it hot so flipping hot we’ll melt! Texas is flat did you know this? heee heee it is real flat …see
We drove on to Austin….wow loved it, loved it just the right size as baby bear would say not to big and not to small just right! They had many great places to eat. They had so many food trucks. I have never seen so many food trucks every place you went they had a food truck lots. A real foodie city!
We are sitting out just soaking up the life there and I am on the phone with an SPG guy trying to land a great hotel for the next few days and ~ oh my gosh I said you will not believe what I just saw oh my gosh, what in the world I just saw a man riding a bike naked…he said yes you did he rides all over. It is so hot who needs clothes wow he said no they just embraces weird people there in Austin well dang. I guess so what ever heee heee to each his own. Already had several people ask me did you get a picture? NO there again not worthy of a picture yuk saggy butt heee heee Who wants to see that?
A few shots of Austin…This was one of the nicest, cutest places I have every been in, it is called Walton’s Fancy and Staple, I loved the space and the way it was done loved it!! If I had a place it would look much like this. Just a little more color like a little pink and green hee hee.
I had the best and most memorable meal here in Austin of our whole trip. We went to the Roaring Fork wow is all I can say. I talked with the waiter about which choice I should make. He gave me some guidance, he suggested their Green Chile Pork Stew well yuk it is so hot out really?? I was thinking something light…he was so sure of his choice and kind he said I will give you half of your choice and half of mine okay there you go. I had chosen fried avocado with fresh crab meat a spicy chili sauce then topped with a mexican cheese. It looked and tasted great! Then he brought out his dish well the guy was right it was an amazing dish it was served in a small cast iron pot topped with melted pepper jack cheese and browned on top ~ okay no picture why I just did not think it was going to be worth talking about much less posting about but it was the best dish of the SUMMER! They serve it with fresh hot homemade buttered tortillas that alone was amazing. Oh my goodness amazing!! I told him I loved it and gave him a good tip ~ well he earned it! I ask him what is in this and he said I will print you the recipe out WHAT!! And he did sweet man! I was so happy, the best souvenir of the whole trip…. A RECIPE!! Before leaving I tried to get some of the things needed to make this dish NO LUCK ! So, I am now on a mission and once I get all the ingredients I will make it, it will be a post here you can rest assured. Man oh man it was so good!
Then back on the road home many more stops and many more meals non as good as that meal at the Roaring Fork. I wanted to drive back for one more helping! yum! Once in Mississippi I went to Dave’s an ole place my folks love to go for lunch and I do too and get the plate lunch which today was you got it…..fried chicken, tater log, mash potatoes with gravy, green beans, corn salad, a roll, divinity and fudge
