The Best 7-up Biscuits

June 7, 2012 by Angie 429 Comments

7 Up Biscuits Okay I am almost embarrassed to post this ~ REALLY

These are so easy and so stinking yummy!! We use to have them at church dinners back when I was a kid remember these ole things heee heee I do! Well, see I bought so much 7-Up to make pound cakes and those coconut cakes. I had it around and thought oh what the heck sounds good and easy lets try them once again. I thought it will be a good way to use up all this 7-Up so I made them and oh dear me they are as good as I remembered really good ~ no kidding and they are the easiest things in the world to make! REALLY!

7 Up Biscuits

4 cups Bisquick
1 cup sour cream
1 cup 7-up
1/2 cup melted butter

Melt butter and put and place in a baking pan

cut sour cream into the Bisquick

Then add one cup 7-up. ***Do not add a whole 7up!

mix in and dump on a well floured surface ~ I used parchment paper, makes clean up easy

then I pat out just with my hand or roll out about 1 inch thick

flour your cutter each time before cutting your biscuits. Once you cut your biscuits add to your pan with the butter.

Bake at 425 until golden brown 20 to 25 minutes enjoy ~ see those boys got to them before I even got a picture WOW ~

Enjoy ~ these are so easy!!

Mom here is a half recipe for you~

2 cups bisquick
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup 7-up
1/4 cup melted butter

These biscuits looked so good & easy to make I had to try them the same day I read your e-mail.
They were delicious straight out of the pan. Then I decided they would make a perfect upside down chicken pot pie. I mixed cooked chicken & all the fresh veggies I like (corn, onion, carrots & peas) together in chicken broth with some corn starch as thickener and poured it over a split biscuit. Try it, if you have any left over biscuits!

    Keep the recipes coming! 🙂

Something must be wrong with me. Everybody seemed to do it so simply. Mine was one big sticky wet mess, Floured my rolling pin and counter top. Would not roll out and stuck to my hands like glue. Somebody help me please!

Charlie….I would say you over worked your dough from the sound of things. I would place a good bit of flour on your work surface and dump your dough out, then place a good bit of flour on top of your dough. Pat the dough into a circle with you hands. Watch the video it will help…..Try again ~ K ya’ll get it this next time!

Hello Charlie. Be sure and flour your hands. You really don’t need a rolling pin. Hands are better, have flour on your counter or your cutting board, dump in on there and add a little light flour. Kneading only as much as needed. Your good to go.

Well we all loved them, they were better than any biscuits I have ever tried to make before. But since this is the first time with the sour cream and 7-up, I can’t compare the Jiffy mix to any of the others. I think I will try the Bisquick next time. Can’t wait to fix them for breakfast sometime!
    Thank You!

How did they turn out when you used the self rising flour? And did you use the same amount that it calls for? Did you make any other changes to this recipe? Because I only have self rising flour and have been wanting to try this. Also all I have is either Diet 7 up or a can of Squirt and I am not sure how either one of those would work or turn out. Because I’m wondering if the Squirt would be a little too citrusy flavored and maybe the Diet 7 up might be a little too flat tasting ? And I was wondering if because it has those artificial sweeteners in it if that will affect the biscuits in any way?

Karen…I do hope they turned out. When I made them the 1st time I thought the very same thing….this is not going to work. These are too wet. They turned out great and have each time. I do fill the pan and place them close together. I do think they helps them rise and fluff up. I wish you success with them.

I never use Bisquick. I usually make my biscuits and pancakes from scratch. But I’ve heard so many people saying how great these biscuits are, I’m going to give them a try. I was just wondering whether you’ve ever heard of anyone trying to replicate these biscuits by combining the sour cream and 7-Up with a home-made recipe and leaving out the Bisquick?

Shane…I have 2 other recipes for biscuits from scratch not using bisquick. Southern Buttermilk Biscuits and Angie’s Pork Pops try one of those if you are not crazy about using bisquick. Go up to the top and there is a cookbook section in pick click on it and go to breads and you will see other recipes. But, I will say you will be surprised at how good they are with 4 ingredients and how easy they are. Thanks for visiting and let us know which ones you try and what you think ~ have a lovely day!!

Yes, I used self rising flour instead of Bisquick and the biscuits worked just fine. Cut a little shortening or butter into the SR flour if you want. I don’t think I even did that. I also always add a little extra baking powder to the SR flour.

Just an FYI. After I stirred this together, I thought this is just too wet. So I looked at the Bisquick box and they mentioned just plopping them in a pan. I made a quarter of this recipe and plopped 4 biscuits into a 9 x 9 pan. They didn’t raise up nice and fluffy, but they were awesome! As long as it’s for family. I will plop, plop away! Biscuits are in the oven in an instant.

I have just finished eating 3 of these biscuits right in a row. They are SO good!!! I used a biscuit mix that I bought at a bulk store, and a no name sprite/7 up type of pop. My dough was sticky but I had read the comments and knew that was to be expected. I just made sure my parchment paper was well floured and floured my hands regularly as I spread out the dough. I used a glass as my biscuit cutter as I’ve never made biscuits at home before, so never needed one. The glass worked fine as long as I kept it floured as well.
I have NO complaints about these biscuits at all. They fluffed up nicely and they taste so good. I may need to go out and buy myself a biscuit cutter after this. 🙂
Thanks for the super easy and super yummy recipe!!

Mine turned out perfect. A confirmed bachelor, I cut the receipe in half and used Canada Dry Ginger Ale. Teriffic! Melted the butter in the baking dish, then poured the butter in a cup. After putting biscuits in the buttered baking dish, drizzled remaining butter over the top. Used Pioneer Brand baking mix and really hovered around the oven watching them. Set oven to 400 degrees.

Tried these with the GF Bisquick and I had to modify… 2 Cups GF Bisquick, 3/4 Cup sour cream, ! Cup 7-UP… melted butter in the pan the same, and I baked them @425 for 25 to 30 min. or until golden brown… not bad, not bad at all… and since I have not had biscuits in about 3 years, they were darn good!;)

Shellie, if you have an old fashion pastry cutter that would work or a just a fork. I think a mixer would over do it. If you did use the mixer, you would have to be very careful not to over work your dough. On the lowest setting and on and off like a short bit . You want it to be just like peas not completely mixed in. I wish you great success and I do hope you and your family has a wonderful Thanksgiving! Smiles…let me know how they come out ! smiles!!

All I can say is WOW!! No possible way 3 little items can make anything so delicious. I was gonna use my mixer to cut in the sour cream, but my arthritis wasn’t so bad this morning so I broke out the pastry cutter and went at it. I just called my husband and told him to bring me another box of bisquick, the one recipe’s worth is not gonna do it for tomorrow. Thanks you so much. Now if I can just stop myself from eating too many myself. “s”

Angie, just made these for dinner, with sausage gravy. I thought I had died and gone to heaven:) I have tried many, many biscuit recipes in my many years of cooking and never, ever had any kind of success with them. Biscuits have always hated me, they wouldn’t rise, were too hard, like hockey pucks. But these turned out super and I was so happy. Thank you so much!

I just made a triple batch and they are so yummy. I used healthy biscuit, light sour cream and diet 7 up and they were still great. Can’t imagine how they would be with extra fat and calories. I used a small cup to cut them and then a spatula to remove from parchment paper to baking dish. Yum Yum!

The next time I bake these I think I might brown the butter a little in my black cast iron frying pan and then add the biscuits and bake them. I bet that will work even better if that is possible. Can’t wait to try this.:)

Got a little more crusted on the bottom but never the less wonderful ! Enjoy!! Thanks for such sweet kind words

Steph ….These are so soft and fluffy ~ for the science part I would be on the side of saying do not think they would rise up nice and fluffy like they do if you make a whole batch. But, I love the try and see method on almost everything I do and many times things do work. I do have other biscuit recipes like pork pops that are great, great make ahead …freeze biscuits. Please try and let us know if it does work…thanks for visiting ~ Merry Christmas to you!

These biscuits were great. Reminds me of the ones my grandmother used to make. I made them to eat with Turkey Noodle soup the day after Christmas…and my family has raved about them. So quick and easy. I will never keep canned biscuits as a go to staple again. These are just too easy to make. Thanks for a great recipe.

    My story:
I had a boat load of produce from my co-op. There were rainbow carrots, bags of taters, leeks. Fine fixin’s for the start of a soup. I picked up some sausage, and kale to go along with the fun and threw a soup in a pot. Unfortunately I forgot to buy some compressed biscuits in a can (you see, these are the only biscuits I am skilled enough to make) I sat here (already undressed from my outing because who wears jeans if they can wear pajama pants??) contemplating getting redressed to go get some biscuits, and perusing Pinterest whilst my soup bubbled away making my house air tasty. I saw a recipe, 4 ingredient biscuits it said, BEST I’ve ever made said the caption. I clicked, hopeful. No link! At this moment I had to have the mystery biscuits. My search led here. I fought with myself but then said “SELF! You can give it one more try, it’s gotten so may pins, let’s do this” End of story. FREAKING AMAZING BISCUITS!! Thanks 😀

A women made these for a church dinner and they were an instant hit .Everyone wanted the recipe. I made them for a dinner we had for our neighbors.I know it was ther favorit.part of the meal..When they saw me make them, they coulden’t believe how easy it was to make I.don’t use a cookie cutter. I just cut the dough in squares. this makes it even easier, no waste to deal with..I will be making them for Easter for my family. We may have a new family tradition. They are soooo delicous.
    thanks for the recipe.

We have had many conversations at our house about square biscuits my dad says that is “Just Wrong”……does not matter the shape to me…cause it is like you say there is no waste and they taste the same. Told him to close his eyes and enjoy does not matter yum is yum square or round….smiles, Angie

I made these for the first time with light sour cream (I’d gotten it by mistake) and they were delicious – especially with honey! I used Pioneer brand instead of Bisquick and floured the waxed paper and top of the dough as I patted it and never had to flour the biscuit cutter. I highly recommend this recipe!

Forget cutting circles. Just cut the dough to the number of squares you want to make and place them in the pan. They end up square anyway and no waste. And believe me you don’t want to waste any of these yummy biscuits.

I didn’t have Bisquick mix so I googled how to make it and tried a full recipe but that is too many so next time I have enough for a half batch. They were very good, everyone in my family agrees they are similar to KFC biscuits but fluffier. FYI Biscquick recipe: 6 C. Flour, 1 T Salt, 3 T Baking Powder mixed together then cut in 1 C Crisco, put it in airtight container in fridge, use as needed.

I thought these turned out wonderfully! Since the recipe was on my computer and I just remembered the basic steps, I did not follow exact directions. I did not cut the sour cream in, just dumped in sour cream and 7-up and mixed with spatula. I kneaded the dough a little and patted out then cut it into 12 pieces with a plastic knife. I balled up each piece and placed it into the melted butter in a 13 X 9 pan. So for not following the directions, they turned out great! Nice and fluffy and golden brown. My Bisquick wads kind of old but I keep it in the refrigerator so it seems to stay a lot fresher that way. Very yummy biscuits!

I had been searching for a good recipe for biscuits when I tied these and they are delicious. But of course we know when we eat biscuits they are an absolute indulgence so once in a while is plenty. But I wanted to see if it was possible to re-imagine this simple and delicious recipe to be a tiny bit healthier. So here’s what I did. I bought a Bob’s Multigrain pancake and waffle mix, used my homemade yogurt instead of sour cream and used some lemon lime essence sparkling water from my soda stream. The results were fantastic! The biscuits still were fluffy and delicious and crunchy on the bottom but with a bit more taste and texture. My family loved them and I will certainly do them this way again.

I just made these and took some over to my Mom’s house and told her to call me with her “honest” opinion of how they taste….OMG ….I could just barely understand what she was saying because she was smacking so loud. She loved them. Thank you so much. My search is over.

Ronnie, Some times the film crew cuts little things out to save time. But, I assure you the 7-Up is in there or they would not turn out. There is several different versions of videos each being a little different. One has cheese, one bacon and cheese. Thanks…hope you enjoy them.

    I ONLY use Krusteaz!
and I form them into a rectangle–score them into 12 biscuits–then lift them into the pan.
    I don’t mess with a cutter.

I liked the biscuits you do need to use some extra flower or baking mix when rolling them out . The next time I think I’ll add some herbs and garlic. I was even thinking of a sweet version with a vanilla soda for breakfast or strawberry short cakes?

Mavis….I am sorry to say not sure they would turn out as well. They get a lot of their fluffiness from the bubbles in the 7 up and that would not chemically work I am afraid. I know it is a lot of work to do it all at the last minute ~ I have a roll recipe and it is more work than these but they are amazing worth every bit of extra time. You can make the dough at least a day ahead roll the rolls out put plastic wrap on them place in the refrigerator till you are ready to bake. Pull out 2 hours before you want to make them, take plastic off let them come to room temperature and rise doing nothing…nothing other than placing them in the oven for 15 – 20 minutes. They make great sandwiches….look and see if you think you can make those I promise they will be such a hit !!

Angie, the video does not show you adding the 7 up, But I imagine you did. I made this last nite from another identical recipe, but it called for kneading which was almost impossible. Anyway, I finally managed it and they came out a little thin but very tasty. I will make again following your instructions.

Chony, I do add the 7 up, I promise. I do talk about this in earlier comments. Ehow does the filming for me and editing. I do not have any control over this part sorry. I do add a good bit of flour on the work surface and on top of the dough. I do make mine rather thick too. Kneading will make them rather tough so do not over work your dough. Hope you enjoy them. They are quick, easy and great. Thanks Angie

Maybe I rolled the biscuits out thinner, but had quite a bit of dough left after filling the 9×13 pan. I used the extra dough and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, rolled and sliced it to make cinnamon rolls. Top while warm with some confectioner sugar icing and both pans were delicious! I texted the pictures to sisters and daughters and they all wanted the recipe.

I made half recipe for the fam this evening. All said it was THE best biscuits they’ve had. Next time, I’ll make the full recipe 🙂 Only problem I had was totally my fault. I didn’t flour my counter top as well as I should’ve. Since this is such a wet and flimsy dough, that is an imperative step. Because of that, I just made them drop biscuits, no biggie. They didn’t raise as well as I thought they would. I tried so hard not to over work my dough but they were still great. No complaints here 🙂 <3

You can skip the rolling and cutting of this recipe by patting the dough into the bottom of the pan and cutting them before baking(deep score works too). bake and run a knife down your score lines to separate. this also leaves no wasted dough.

Ok, great success with this: put all dough straight out of mixing bowl right into a gallon Ziploc bag. With scissors, cut about a one inch diagonal corner off the bottom of the bag. Pipe 4 piles of dough on one short side of the pan, using the scissors to cut the dough off evenly. Continue the rows across the pan. Uniform biscuits, no mess, no kneading! They rise like a dream!!

Fantastic recipe. I messed up the first time I made them and put the butter into the dough mixture, which made them VERY sticky but I persisted and added more bis quick as I kneaded the dough until I could cut it. Did they turn out?? Yup, absolutely delicious. I don’t recommend how I did it, but the point is they still turned out amazing. Doing them again tonight. The right way.

Believe or not, substituted Fresca for the 7up (I used Ginger Ale in past) and they still came out very delicious. They were gone before the pan made it to the table. Also, I didn’t drop or cut the biscuits: hand patted dough out in pan with melted butter and then after baking, cut. Best ever.

Why so much butter? There has to be a way to make biscuits and reduce the fat and cholesterol. I am new to living in the US and I find a lot of restaurants serve biscuits…but they are just saturated with butter you can almost squeeze it out. I like them but can’t have a hard time eating 1 whole biscuit because of the fat.

Ricki, each recipe has different taste and has different amounts of fat. This is one recipe that happens to have a large amount of butter. I have several on the site that have other fats and smaller amounts. This recipe is easy and fast but has a lot of butter. They are really good….if you have ever had them you will see why so many like them. Easy…fast….not much work and tasty. Biscuits typically do have a fair amount of fat. Hope this explains compared to other breads yes many biscuits are loaded with fat. Angie

This recipe sounds so easy and I decided to make it for a pot luck I am attending this weekend. Can it be made ahead of time and taken to the hostess’s home to be baked? Just wondering if it would deteriorate if not baked right away.

Jackie, I have never made them ahead to bake later so I am sorry I am not much help here. I know they get most of the fluff from the carbonated drink. These are one item that is best right out of the oven so baking ahead and then taking not a great idea. Try it and let us know, Wishing you great success …..smiles, Angie

These are delicious, although I did have some trouble with my dough consistency. It was very thin and runny, more like cake batter than bread dough and impossible to roll out or cut. I ended up pouring the “batter” into the pan and then cutting it into squares like brownies after it had baked. Not the prettiest biscuits but they do taste amazing.

It looks like a lot of people have runny batters. in the photo it looks like a dry measure is used for the 7-up and not a liquid measuring cup?

I am curious has anyone used soda water or seltzer water? I am not a fan of sprite or 7 up and really never have soda in the house but I love seltzer water so always have cans of it. I assume it is just the carbonation that helps with the rise and the lightness of the dough. I know that soda water helps make great pancakes

Matt….I agree with you on the soda thing, try it the soda water and let us know how it worked for you. I know there is also sugar in this 7-up that does add to the taste of the rolls/biscuits. We do not drink soda at our home, we do use Perrier like it is going out of business. next time we will try just using the sparkling water and see what the results are…happy baking ~ Angie

Carolyn, My guess would be to move it up to the top shelf in your oven. I would suggest to turn your oven down a little to maybe 400 or 375, your oven may run a little hotter….at high temps some ovens cook differently. Smiles, Angie

Tango, I would add a generous amount of flour to your work surface, a generous amount to the top of you dough and you should be good. They are a little on the sticky side, but in the end they turn out great, moist on the inside. Let us know how your next batch turns out. Angie

When did you add the 7-up? I assume right after the sour cream? Mine was very sticky and had to add more flour. I guess I folded and mixed the dough to long. The recipe wasn’t very clear that I used from facebook. Mine turned ok, but I see some practice is in store. The were still good and the grandkids liked them.

I made these last night. I patted the dough out a little thinner than an inch. I added a layer of biscuits to my buttered dish, then added a precooked sausage patty and a slice of cheese to each biscuit round, then added another biscuit round to the top. Then I baked as usual. You have a whole pan of sausage & cheese biscuits with little effort. I did a 1/2 recipe and got 8 breakfast sandwiches. I can’t wait to make a whole recipe and have a 9×13 pan full of sandwiches. Soooo gooood!!!

I’ve made these several times. The dough will be sticky. I do half of the dough at a time, if using a biscuit cutter, sprinkle plenty of flour on your surface and gently pat the dough out to desired thickness (I use a regular tablespoon to pat the dough out.) If the directions are followed, these buscuits are wonderful!

I don’t even bother rolling the dough out and using a floured cutter to make them pretty and round. I spoon the sticky dough out using a large round serving spoon and just drop them into the melted butter. Delicious!!! They are not perfectly round but they don’t last long enough to care.

I do not think you would be happy with the results making them the night before…sorry to say there are other biscuit recipes on the site you could make the night before {not as easy as these…but great} The rise in this recipe comes from the bubbles in the soda ~ which last only for a short while. So, making and baking right away causes the chemistry to work. Sorry, wish I had better news for you.

I’ve been making these for a few years now & have followed your recipe to the letter. In reading the comments, my dough always turns out like Charlie had mentioned..a sticky mess, lol! I only make them at Christmas & I must “forget” how wet the dough is..it must be from the sour cream..I have to add over a cup of flour to my dough to get it to a workable state.otherwise it’s just way too sticky as the recipe calls. I would definitely have a surface packed in flour, but there needs to be more added to the recipe even? The biscuits are delicious once they’re made..I just don’t look forward to making them 🙂

I have made these several times, they are great. I have a question can I make these a few hours ahead of time. Having company would like to have the mess cleaned up before they arrive.

Debra, I have never made them ahead..but the science in this would say no due to the carbonation in the 7-up going flat and there for your biscuits also being flat….sorry wish I had better news for you ~ you could make them and cook them to the almost done stage like a par bake and then finish them off once the company arrives…update us how this works? Thanks Angie

I need to make 100 biscuits for a crowd, can I make ahead and freeze? If so, do I thaw them before baking?

Debi, I am sorry I have never made them and frozen them, they get the rise from the carbonation in the soda. I am not sure they would turn out at all, I would be afraid they would be flat? Sorry !

I tried these and love them. Easy to make. Light and fluffy. Tender dough. Not dry tasting.

Have made this recipe and always turned out perfect. However mine dough is too soft to pat out and cut. I just use a large spoon and scoop into dish, leaving a 1/4 inch space between. They expand as they back and the butter bubbling up allows them to be separated once done baking. A truly wonderful old-timely biscuit, worth trying. ? Yummy

This a great easy recipe. Light and fluffy biscuits. I’m partial to Pioneer mix”original” works great, pat out to size of pan, cut, cook and enjoy.

these biscuits were quite a hit for our family dinner. However; the recipe required quite a bit more of the bisquick added to it in order to make it workable.

There’s just two problems I can’t seem to solve with my favorite biscuits. The butter is always too browned and the biscuits are a little soggy under the bottom. Anyone know why this might be happening?

    Hey…Barbra

I would say your oven is cooking a little to hot, lower your temperature a little like 25 degrees. I would think that would help tremendously.
    All the best…Angie

This dough is super wet – I add enough flour to handle and use a large drinking glass to cut out. These run together as shown, but this makes them more uniform. Finally, this is the time for parchment paper if you have it. Both with the dough (flour this) and while baking for ease in removal and .clean up.

These look awesome, kind of reminds me of my mom’s biscuits she made when I was still at home. Of course, she didn’t use a recipe, kept her flour in a bowl & mixed up the ingredients in the bowl. I tried to watch what she did, but she was too fast. I never could make them her way. Thanks for coming up with these, I have to use the recipe for your mom though. Can you substitute the sour cream with something else? I’m not find of it. 🤗

I expanded the recipe 6X and made the biscuits for our local public high school. The teachers often do not have the time to eat anything for breakfast, so I try to help them from time to time. I baked the biscuits in well-seasoned deep dish pizza pans I had with sweet butter, honey, syrup, and fresh homemade watermelon marmalade.
