Sweet MaMa’s Pound Cake

August 25, 2011 by Angie 26 Comments

This is a recipe I have been after for YEARS!!!

There is this little place in St Simon’s called Sweet Mama’s. Okay I have tried and tried to get this recipe with no avail….I have begged for the recipe begged! When wal la I find the recipe on the internet after looking for it many, many times over the years ~ OMGoodness!

I made it and this is it!! This is it!! It is so yummy! Homey dessert but oh so yummy! But hey you know me I have to tweak it just a little…I think the topping was a little runny ~ so there no I can’t leave it alone oh well.

I am not a box making cook so ~ I was so reluctant!! But, I did and oh my so glad I did!!

It is like a pound cake with cheese cake on top then pecans and powdered sugar ~ will put you in a diabetic fit! Enjoy!!

Aunt Dee’s Pound Cake

16 oz pound cake mix ~ Dromedary brand {Publix)
5 large eggs
1/2 cup butter softened
1/4 cup whole milk
1/8 cup heavy cream ~ 1/4 measure next time how about it
1 box 10x powder sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped pecans
8 oz cream cheese softened

Combine pound cake mix, 2 eggs, milk, cream and butter mix well and add to a half sheet baking pan 13 x 9 {Chicago Metallic Pan}  ~ yes, you must use parchment paper ~ you want it to come out don’t you? Spread evenly over the pan.

Combine the cheese, powdered sugar {reserve about 1/4 cup for top} 3 eggs and vanilla ~ mix well beat in standing mixer well, spread over 1st layer.

Amazon sells this… yep they do they have everything!!

Could not find the Dromedary mix this week.  So, I got the Betty Crocker Mix and it was still really good ~ We could not tell the difference.

The pans after added the pound cake batter ~ make 2 one for us and one to take to someone else.It looks the same doesn’t it? This is after the cream cheese layer is added.

add pecans to cream cheese layer

Dust with powder sugar ~ Bake at 350 for 40 minutes cool and cut and eat. Oh this brings back such sweet memories!
Keep in the fridge ! Yummy…. yummy! This is as good as it gets !! Thanks Marsha :O)

Note to self ~ Made changes and it is just right now ~ no more tweaking ~ wow GREAT!! Leave it alone !! heee heee ~ K

Note ~ on the Dromedary mix seems as if this is a seasonal mix. I made my own if you want the info let me know and I will post it is amazing! I have also used the Betty Cocker mix and Pillsbury ~ Dromedary is best and cheapest too ! Okay

Love your site! You know I love to cook also, must run in the family. I am so glad I watch mother cook when I was young. You should see all the recipes that Mother has. You need to get with her sometimes and get some of her old recipes that she has collected over the years. Take care and keep on doing what you love.

Thanks!! Now if I could just get the recipe for Sweet Mama’s Sonny Delight, my life would be complete 🙂 I have the recipe for the Key Lime Cake bars. Even though they were friends, my Mom could never get Marsha to give up the recipe, so after about a dozen tries I came up with something so close I couldn’t tell the difference and when my Mom showed the recipe to her, she confirmed that it was about the same. But,I really need the Sonny Delight recipe!

You are welcome…thanks for visiting! I too would love to have Sonny’s Delight recipe. If and when I come up with it I will post it! I was told there was one just like it in a local church cookbook! So, I am so driven to find this recipe each time I am in the area I look at all the old cookbooks. I look at thrift shops yard sales where ever. I am sure if I put my mind to it I could make it up…so funny my husband said just spend the summer here and go work for her ~ yea that is a great idea ! For a recipe naw, I have lost my mind! Heeee Heee have a lovely day!

Do you know which church cookbook? My Mom has several of the local area church and service league cookbooks. I’ll start looking through them next time I visit! I’ve heard that Sweet Mama’s either is or was up for sale. My kids want us to move down there and buy it! That would be even more extreme than working there for a summer!!

oh so funny!!! I’ll come work for you!! heee heee No, I do not know which church cookbook it was in and believe me if I did I would start going to church there! Yes, I have heard it is for sale. It is such a sweet little place and such a ole timey wonderful southern bakery..hate to see it change. But, lets face it that is a lot of work for any one, each and every day! The last few times I have been in Marsha is not there? I do hope she is well? She is such a sweet person! I did see her husband havin lunch with some buddies.

I know. I hated when they closed the East Beach location. My parents lived walking distance from there and of course we would walk there every night after dinner when visiting!! And the Frederica location apparently has moved also. My Mom and Marsha worked together before she opened Sweet Mama’s. I heard they are just ready to retire after 24 years! I do hope someone buys it that will carry on the tradition. If I had the money, I’d buy it in a heartbeat!!

Marsha and her husband (Boomer) were members of St. Simons United Methodist Church in the Village for years, may still be. I would start there first.

Sonny’s Delight is on my list of recipes to get or either master on my own. I do have a recipe for 3 layer brownies and these are very similar but a lot fancier, they are nice enough for a dinner party. Please try them and let me know what you think. I take them to when I am requested to bring an item and get many, many request for recipes and calls of wow love them ~ fun to go to a party and see some else has made my 3 layers brownies and now call them their own ! What a huge complement.

What is shown is one recipe or one batch. Those shown are a disposable 8 X 8 pan with lids I get at the grocery stores? I also bake this recipe in a half sheet pan which fills the whole pan. I hope you all have a wonderful vacation and enjoy your pound cake…..safe travels ~ Angie

I would like to have the pound cake recipe you used for this. I’ve made it with Betty Crocker and it’s great but would love to try from scratch.
